Our teacher had us listen to two interviews she conducted to help us with our assignment to interview a PR professional. The assignment is to ask the PR professional questions regarding day-to-day work, about education background, how technology and writing affect work, and tips for students. Our teacher, Barbara Nixon, interviewed  Kneal Mann and Martin Waxman.

Kneal Mann is from Canada. Mann has had many different jobs. For 23 years he was in radio. He is also former newspaper columnist. He wrote a column called Space Odysseys about space and how we use it.  Mann describes himself as working in private and public sectors. His work with public sectors includes work with non-profit organizations such as habitat for humanity and government work. Mann’s work in the private sector is within his own company, YouIntegrate. He says that there are few differences between the two sectors. However he did say that public sectors had more to do with social media and marketing while private sectors allow him to create business strategies overall. Mann gives a lot of advice about blogging. He started his own blog without knowing what he would write about. He figured it out successfully I might add. My favorite piece of advice he gives: “just write and keep writing.” This blogging thing can be confusing, but when I keep up with it ideas do come to me.

The other interview was with Martin Waxman who worked at a PR agency in Toronto, Canada. The agency is mainly a consumer marketing agency. The agency is founded on three things: simplicity, energy and integrity. The agency hosts a launch off for social media that will be about $25,000. As for social media Waxman talks about it when he uses podcasting. He prefers this to blogs. I hardly know anything about podcasting, so it was interesting hearing a professional’s personal views. Waxman teaches in Canada. When he teaches he focuses on communication strategy especially the importance of necessities. It was interesting because he said he focuses on teaching the basics about communication strategies even with the influence technology has on it today. It is important not to get too caught up in all the technology.
